A new University of Illinois policy requiring background checks for all new employees is expected to start Oct. 5. The school already requires background checks for employees with positions considered “security-sensitive,” and those who work with money, children or in a hospital.
Last year, the school announced plans to expand background checks to all employees, including faculty members, academic professionals and civil service workers. The checks will be conducted after a job offer has been made and accepted by the employee, and before the appointment heads to the Board of Trustees for approval. Specific procedures, including what happens when a check turns up a “hit” and who will decide whether the employee should be hired, are still being finalized.
