The Coming Decline of the Employment Drug Test

Marijuana is now legal in nine states and Washington, D.C., which has resulted in the slow decline of pre-employment drug tests. Excellence Health Inc., a Las Vegas-based health care company with about 6,000 employees, no longer drug tests people coming to work for the pharmaceutical side of the business. And AutoNation Inc. recently announced that it would no longer refuse job applicants who tested positive for marijuana. James Reidy, a lawyer that works with employers on their human resources policies, said companies are having a hard enough time hiring and forgiving certain things allows businesses to make positive changes to unemployment rates. Eliminating drug testing not only helps ease the labor market, but it also could have an even broader benefit for the economy.
