Remote I-9 Verification and the DHS Alternative Procedure Explained

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established a permanent remote Form I-9 verification option for
employers enrolled in E-Verify, replacing temporary COVID-19 flexibilities. Eligible employers may verify employees’
identity and work authorization documents through live video, retain document copies, and note remote verification on
Form I-9. Employers not participating in E-Verify must continue in-person document inspections. The rule also
introduced a streamlined Form I-9 and provides flexibility for qualifying employers while maintaining compliance
requirements.
