The trucking industry may soon see expanded drug-testing methods that could significantly affect background
screening and hiring decisions. Hair testing can identify drug use for 90 days or more, while oral-fluid testing is better
suited to detecting recent use. Although these methods are not yet fully approved for DOT purposes, carriers can
already use hair testing in hiring decisions. Employers should monitor regulatory developments because broader
testing could provide more extensive drug-use histories during driver screening and recruitment.
