An opinion piece by Shantell George claimed that background checks done by private sector businesses were inaccurate. However, she failed to offer any statistics to substantiate that opinion. Background checks done by private sector companies are more accurate and more complete than those provided by government agencies accessing fingerprint-only databases. The Ohio database that George touted, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations, is woefully incomplete. The most accurate background screening assessment is one that uses both information from private sector databases and fingerprint checks, especially when evaluating job candidates who will be employed in jobs dealing with public safety and sensitive financial information Companies that do these comprehensive background checks can review court records and other sources across Ohio and the nation, government databases cannot.
