An investigation recently revealed flaws in Ohio’s background check system that led to one woman’s nightmare. In 2010, she lost her husband when he was shot and killed by co-worker Nathaniel A. Brown. Brown, a janitor, also injured another man before killing himself at Ohio State University. The university’s background check failed to pick up on a prior felony conviction. The state’s failing technology, use of snail mail, and too little staff members have been blamed for several cases like this. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has revealed that it is upgrading the system, but contract negotiations are ongoing.
