Colorado’s New Identity Document Law Adds Employer Compliance Obligations

Colorado’s HB 25-1139, effective July 1, 2026, expands the types of identity documents employers may accept during hiring and employment verification, including certain municipal identification cards and foreign-issued identity documents where permitted by law. The legislation requires employers to update hiring procedures, train HR staff, and ensure identity document policies are applied consistently to avoid discrimination claims.
