The new “Smart” Form version of the Form I-9, which must be completed by all new hires within their first three days of work, has been updated to eliminate costly fines for errors submitted on the form. Key highlights include an evaluation of the number of digits entered for social security numbers; the use of drop down lists and embedded instructions; a dedicated area to enter additional information; and a QR code designed to streamline the audit process. Employers are encouraged to check the revision date on the bottom left corner of the Form I-9.
