Virginia Allows Criminal Records to be Sealed for First Time in Commonwealth’s History

Virginia has enacted a landmark law allowing certain criminal convictions to be sealed from public view, effective July
1, 2026. Individuals with qualifying misdemeanor or low-level felony convictions can petition to have their records
sealed, making them inaccessible to most employers, landlords, and educational institutions. Automatic sealing applies
to specific offenses, including marijuana possession and certain misdemeanors, after a set period. This measure aims
to provide individuals with a second chance at employment and housing opportunities.
