A recently published Quest Diagnostics Drug Testing Index has demonstrated that illicit drug use among United States employees is on the rise, resulting in the highest drug test positivity rates in the last 12 years. The survey of more than 10 million workforce drug test results revealed that positive cocaine drug test results increased for a fourth straight year, positive marijuana drug test results increased among all three testing specimens, positive test results for amphetamines increased more than eight percent and heroin detection remained steady after four years of increases. Employers should consider whether the company’s current drug testing practices address the potential safety risks.
