Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker approved the Sonya Massey Act following the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey by a sheriff’s
deputy in July 2024. It mandates exhaustive background checks—including prior employment records, psychological
evaluations, fitness-for-duty reports, and internal investigations—before a law enforcement job offer. Applicants must
authorize release of such records. The law aims to prevent hiring individuals with serious misconduct histories and to
ensure greater trust between police and communities.
