In November, Maine became one of four states in which voters approved a new recreational marijuana law. The law took effect on Jan. 30, but emergency legislation passed on Jan. 27 delayed the implementation of certain provisions of the law. This included pushing the effective date to Feb. 1, 2018, so that the state licensing authority can establish and implement regulations concerning retail sales of marijuana, as well as clarification that the possession of a usable amount of marijuana by a juvenile is a crime, unless the juvenile is authorized to possess medical marijuana. In addition, the legislation prohibits possession of any edible retail marijuana products until Feb. 1, 2018. Under the law, employers are not required to permit or accommodate the use, consumption, possession, trade, display, transportation, sale or growing of marijuana in the workplace.
