According to a 2016 Gallup poll, more than 60 percent of Americans support the legalization of marijuana, the highest approval rating in its 47-year history. In 2010, two out of every five of the $249 billion spent on alcohol in the United States were paid by federal, state, and local governments. Given that marijuana is the second-most abused drug in the United States after alcohol, one can only assume that as marijuana continues to be legalized, the cost of its use could surpass that of alcohol. And what’s more, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration revealed that more than 28 percent of the traffic deaths in 2010 could be attributed to marijuana use.
