Members of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians have approved a referendum supporting the legalization of
marijuana on tribal lands. The measure, known as Referendum 2025-01, passed with 55 percent of the vote, according
to unofficial results. The tribe, the only federally recognized Native American tribe in Mississippi, plans to develop
legislation to decriminalize and regulate the possession, production, and distribution of marijuana on its 35,000 acres
of territory. This move positions the tribe as the first jurisdiction in Mississippi to legalize cannabis. The tribe will now
engage consultants to conduct a feasibility study and research potential regulations.
